New Food Pantry To Meet Emergency Food Needs in Terrebonne
By Gayle Griffith
Smith Rock Community
Food Pantry is a new non-profit Christian based program starting in
February to supply emergency food needs for the Terrebonne Community.
“Our desire is to serve the Terrebonne community first, and offer help
to those in need of food” said Pastor Travis Campbell about the new
program.
The new emergency
food program will be housed out of the Smith Rock Community Church using
volunteers to help meet the needs of certain people in the Terrebonne
and surrounding community. It is a joint effort of the three local
churches, and caring individuals, who desire to serve the area’s most
needy by providing a family with a one week supply of food.
The Food Pantry will
open its doors the first Monday in February, and will operate one day a
week from ll:00 am to 2:00 pm. A sign will be set up in front of the
church when the food pantry is open. Inside the church will be
volunteers to help provide food to those in need, and information on
other resources available in Central Oregon such as Food Stamps, Senior
Centers, Meals-on-Wheels program, and where hot meals are available in
the Central Oregon area.
A profile sheet will
be taken as food is given, and follow up will be done to provide as much
help as possible to those in need. Available too will be a $10.00 per
person clothing voucher redeemable free at the Humane Society Thrift
Store in Redmond. Each family member can then choose clothing at no cost
to them or the church. Vouchers will also be available for perishable
foods at the Terrebonne Thriftway Store for items such as milk, eggs,
cheese or hamburger.
“The food boxes
will feed a family of four for one week. And we’ll also have food boxes
for two people. That way if the family is bigger, we can combine the
boxes to adjust to family size,” said Pastor Travis. “We’re not going to
turn anyone away. We’ll have emergency food for transients that come
through town. If they stop by, we’ll have a one-day bag for them,” he
said. “We’re excited about this new program for the Terrebonne
community, and look forward to serve the needs of local people.”
Brochures will be
available locally in businesses, and information can be obtained from
any of the three churches involved in the ministry. In addition to
Pastor Travis Campbell of the Smith Rock Community Church, Pastor Frank
Cook of Day Spring Christian Center, and Pastor Rick Windlinx of the
Terrebonne Assembly of God, are available to provide information to
anyone seeking to learn about the new food pantry program.
Donations to the
food boxes will gladly be accepted from anyone wishing to help in this
ministry. Please contact one of the above churches for guidelines of
items that are needed to complete the food boxes. A listing of basic
items is available, and financial contributions are always welcome.
